Postmodern Art Deco reflection of historical decadence

Singapore’s Atlas Bar and Café is on North Bridge Road in Singapore’s Bugis neighbourhood. The Parkview Square building was completed in 2002 and the project was designed by the US architectural firm James Adams Design in conjunction with DP Architects of Singapore. The writer remembers Singapore's Bugis Street from many years ago when the area was very lively and well known for the lady-boys who strutted their stuff in the street.

The Parkview building is known by some Singaporeans as the Gotham Building because of its architectural style. It is a twenty four storeyed skyscraper owned and operated by Chyau Fwu Development (S) PTE Ltd whose managing director is Vicky Hwang. She is the third of nine granddaughters and five grandsons of the late Mr C.S.Hwang, a Taiwanese property developer and the founding chairman of Chyau Fwu Development who passed away in 2004.

This postmodern Art Deco inspired lobby bar was originally known as Divine Wine Extraordinaire and was  subsequently re-named Atlas Bar.

The bar’s centre piece is a gin tower containing more than one thousand bottles of gin and there is a Rose Gold Champagne Room offering more than two hundred and fifty varieties of champagne. The café’s reasonably priced cuisine is directed by executive chef Daniele Sperindio.
